The album's title Zen'aku (善悪 or ぜんあく) is a Japanese word that simultaneously means both good and evil. This small work, in a sense, is a continuation of the LP album Pobeg (Escape), released in February 2020. Using images of 6 different yokai, Zen'aku explores my personal sensation of the inner balance of a human being. The word yokai consists of kanji [妖怪], which simultaneously denotes trouble, charm, something inexplicable or otherworldly.

In Japanese, there is an expression for evening and pre-dawn twilight. It is a mysterious time when one seems to see something, hear strange noises, notice silhouettes in the fog. It is at dusk that a person most often meets with the otherworldly, although nothing prevents the yokai from surprising us with its appearance on a hot afternoon as well.

The word yokai refers not only to beings, but also to a broad range of other phenomena. For example, there is a sound yokai. If you hear a mysterious noise near a pond, as if someone is washing red adzuki beans, it is an adzuki arai; and if there is a suspicious noise in the bushes, perhaps a kunesuri is shaking the hedge.

The EP features 6 yokai, each has its own character and captures the experience in its own way through sound and form. Seeking to understand the ambiguity and inconsistency of the mood flows in music, which are closely related to their images, I tried to show the perspective of changes in the sound and time parameters. On the one hand, it is a ritual dance played with traditional Japanese instruments, in which we move reactively through forests or open spaces with insects. On the other hand, it is a meditation rite, where we are deep inside the sounding space itself. The sound of the Japanese forest heard and recorded through audio streams is contrasted with artificially created noises and, sometimes, the instrumentation of a chamber piece. Each yokai composition explores the sacred world of sounds in its own way.

Название альбома дзен’аку (善悪 или ぜんあく) –– это японское слово, одновременно означающее добро и зло. Эта небольшая работа, в каком-то смысле, является продолжением LP альбома «Побег», изданного в феврале 2020 года. Используя образы 6 разных ёкаев, «дзен’аку» исследует моё личное чувствование внутреннего баланса человеческого существа. Слово «ёкай» состоит из кандзи [妖怪], обозначающих одновременно беду, очарование, нечто необъяснимое или потустороннее.

В японском языке есть выражение для обозначения вечерних и предрассветных сумерек. Это таинственное время, когда что-то мерещится, слышатся странные шорохи, силуэты видятся в тумане. Именно в сумерки человек чаще всего встречается с потусторонним, хотя ничто не мешает ёкаю удивить нас своим появлением и в жаркий полдень.

Словом ёкай обозначаются не только существа, но и обширный класс других явлений. Например, встречаются ёкаи звука. Если вы слышите загадочный шум близ водоёма, будто кто-то моет красную фасоль адзуки, –– это адзуки арай; а если раздается подозрительный шум в кустах, возможно, кунэсури трясёт живую изгородь.

На EP представлены 6 ёкаев, каждый из которых имеет свой характер и по-своему фиксирует переживание через звук и форму. Стараясь понять неоднозначность и противоречивость течения настроений в музыке, которые тесно связаны с их образами, я попробовал показать перспективу изменений параметров звука и времени. С одной стороны –– это ритуальный танец, сыгранный на народных японских инструментах, в котором мы реактивно движемся сквозь леса или открытые пространства с насекомыми. С другой –– это обряд-медитация, где мы глубоко находимся внутри самого звучащего пространства. Услышанный и записанный через аудио стримы звук японского леса противопоставлен искусственно созданным шумам и, порой, инструментовке камерной пьесы. Каждая композиция-ёкай по-своему изучает сакральный мир звуков.
