Popov was born on August 2, 1951 in Tashkent. He was struggling for human rights in USSR for which he was seriously harmed. He was sentenced for 10 years in 1967. He spoke not much about these past events, only about severity of the punishment, since he didn’t fall under amnesty. He learned to play guitar in jail: he took lessons from prisoners, practicing self-taught and thought out by himself. The craving for guitar began before the imprisonment. He was fond of The Beatles, rhythms’n’blues, boogie and everything else the could be illigally obtained at that time.
In 1977 after the prison his life wasn’t better and Popov has left Tashkent permanently. He lived, worked and continued to improve his techniques and even taught in regional houses of culture. He participated in local competitions, took prizes and moved about often. In the 80s he has served two more sentences and by 1991 he finally reached Moscow.
He called himself VelikoRusskiy, planetary-popular ‘HIPPIE-ETHNO-TURBO-TRANS GUITARIST’. He played various music but mostly he preferred meditative psychedelic à la Pink Floyd, which he called ‘Orthodox Vedism’. The chain of guitar processors worked for him as support group. He usually played his guitar in Aleksandrovsky Garden, near the Griboyedov monument at Chistye Prudy, in club at Petrovka street and spend the night at the Kazansky railway station. He was a real nugget, creating sound magic, constisting of noises, rhythms, ambient and melodies.
Popov Aleksander Kuzmitch tragically died in fire in 2008.
